Loving with Autism: Driving to School

Loving with Autism: Driving to School

Today as I watched Thomas walk into school… after he had driven there… and I have to pinch myself… he is driving… well I had a moment of reflection…

He is doing so great and he is going to be ok… for all of the kicked in walls, the swearing, the spitting, the broken windows and the grief that we felt we were drowning in… even though there was all of that he is going to be just fine!

He is working at the Coffee Club one day a week, heĀ is never late for work or for school… he never wants to ‘disappoint’ his teachers or anybody else… he adds a unique sparkle to his service at the cafe as he presents the meals with enthusiastic and unique gestures as he says ‘enjoy your meals’!! It is hard to inspire people in the normal spectrum to add such personality and uniqueness to there service!

He does his own washing and unpacks the dishwasher without being asked, just because it is obvious it needs doing…

He loves the people he really loves with a depth of feeling that can truly be felt in the hugs he gives as he wraps his big arms around you…

Yep, I want you to know that if you are in the midst of the worst of times to hang in there because it will get better… and you won’t always see how it could possibly get better no matter how hard you look… so sometimes you just have to let go, do your best and trust… and then one day you wake up and you just won’t believe how much better it got… and you will see and know that it was all worth it… and you breathe out.
