Loving with Autism: Shoes

One of the many challenges we had with Thomas was buying him new shoes… he wouldn’t sit still, he hated anybody touching his feet and he would start screaming as soon as we got close to a shoe shop…

Mostly we didn’t know exactly why he hated it so much, but he did… and I am sure he set some time in shoes to small for him because it was so difficult to manage! And this went on for many years.

SO, you can imagine my delight when he came home yesterday and I noticed new shoes on his feet… I asked him where he got them and he looked at me like I was mad and he said, ‘I bought them of course!’…

And so he told me that he went to the Sport Store and the man helped him buy shoes…

You see that achievement to me is a truly winning moment!

When you think about him entering the shop, having a conversation about the shoes he wanted, having them fitted and then purchasing his new $120!!!! shoes with his own money… well that is a win all round and brings tears to my eyes!
